After Giza and the Sphinx, you head south to Saqqara for Djoser's Step Pyramid — the first attempt — and then to Dahshur, which most visitors never reach. The Bent Pyramid is where the angle was changed halfway up because the design was failing; the Red Pyramid beside it is where they finally got it right. Standing between the two, you can read the mistake and the correction in the stone.

Memphis, the old capital, closes the day, with its fallen colossus of Ramses II and the great alabaster sphinx.
